Recruitment Advisor Job Profile

Monster: What made you want to be a Lecturer?
Rob: I always enjoyed my time working as a Plumber and as a Heating engineer. I did my apprentice with Haden Young and they always encourage the apprentices to help each other. I always enjoyed helping the younger apprentices learn and it was this that first made me think that maybe one day I would like to teach and pass on my skills to new apprentices.

What skills and education are essential to your job?
To become a lecturer you need to have a qualification in the industry you want to teach in. I believe that experience from the industry you want to teach in is even more important as passing on your own experiences really helps the students to learn.

Within two years of starting the job as a lecturer you are expected to enrol on a degree in teaching. I was worried about this at first but the college and other lecturers really helped me with any problems that I had.

What advice can you offer someone wanting to become a Lecturer?
The best advice I could offer anybody wanting to get into teaching others is not to worry.

The first piece of advice I was ever given was not to worry that I did not know every piece of Plumbing theory because I definitely knew more than the students. I have learnt so much since I have started teaching and anytime I was ever asked a question I was not sure of I told them I would find out and I did. The students like this approach and once I found out I then knew for whenever the question was asked again.

What are the best and worst things about your role?
The best aspect of the job is that you get more job satisfaction than any job I have ever had before. When you get new student who know nothing and you teach them all year and then they pass at the end of the course it gives you a real sense of achievement.

The worst part of the job is that when you first start there is a lot of paperwork you have to complete. After you are here a while and you learn how to get on top of the paperwork it becomes easier though.

Are there any perks to the job?
One of the best perks of the my job is the amount of holidays we receive. All through the summer its like being a kid again at school. We also get Private healthcare paid for and a great pension. The perks of this job are one of the best things about it.

What is the end goal in your career?
I loved my time working as a plumber and I still miss certain aspects about working on-site. But this is the best career move I have ever made and I love my job. The college offer training on anything that you need and I have been on computer courses and training courses that have helped me and my career immensely.

Finish this sentence. "This week I have been mostly..."
“…relaxing, talking about a subject I have done all my life and looking forward to the next holiday.”
